“Butterfly Angel” Custom Bronze Statue
Primary Children’s Medical Center. Salt Lake City, UT
Bronze angel statues are are often placed at the cemeteries. Lena created a 6′ tall custom bronze statue of an angel guiding a little girl to heaven. This custom bronze portrait statue “Erica’s Angel”, depicting a smiling child waving good-bye and holding the angel’s hand, became a recognizable landmark at Montrose Cemetery in Chicago IL.
Sometimes a more uplifting angel statue, or a cherub statue can be seen in the gardens and private houses. A custom angel statue in any size, a life-size bronze figure or a small sculpture, will become a conversation piece and can create an enchanting atmosphere.
“To make a wish come true, whisper it to a butterfly. Upon these wings it will be taken to Heaven and granted, for they are messengers of the Great Spirit.”
— Native American Legend
To create this monument for Primary Children’s Hospital, Tortich combined two time honored symbols in a new way. The butterfly is a long time symbol of reinvention, new beginnings, changing from one thing to another, emerging better than ever before and rebirth. Angels are found in many religions. They are usually seen as spiritual beings who act as intermediators between humans and god. The word angel comes from the Greek word angelos, meaning “messenger.” In Western religions, the word specifically describes a kind, or benevolent, being. Since the Butterfly angel is at a children’s hospital it if fitting that the Toritch Angel is child-like. This angel gives comfort to children and parents who need a place of quiet reflection to re-group and re-energize. A charming sculpture that speaks to children and adults offering a hope and wonder.
